Two 2016 Tutu Fellows, Amanda Gicharu and Jon Kornik, have been selected for the final one thousand candidates for UNLEASH 2017. Each year, UNLEASH sets up global innovation labs in which they bring together this group and get them working on themes such as water, food, energy, sustainable consumption and production and others. The large number offers UNLEASH the ability to tap some of the best minds of a generation and obtain critical mass on social issues.
The culmination of the innovation lab takes place across three days in Aarhus, the European capital of culture in 2017, where solutions to sustainable development goals are inspired, considered, and tested. The goal is to create real, scalable solutions to sustainable development. Later in the year, the teams present their ideas to peers, experts and investors.
UNLEASH holds these labs in a different country each year and calls its groups of one thousand the 'talent of a generation'. The group of one thousand comprises academics, entrepreneurs, intrapreneurs, and technical experts between the age of 20-35 and are selected from more than 10,000 applicants. Both Amanda Gicharu and Jon Kornik have strong backgrounds in social entrepreneurship: Amanda is the founder of Tech Republic Africa and Jon is a serial innovator and has worked with Google and recently started Plentify.
